Father of William CHANCELLOR of South Carolina

My 2nd great-grandfather William Chancellor was born between 1780 and 1790 in Cheraws, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. We do not know who his parents--my 3rd great-grandparents--were. We know that William won land in the Cherokee Land Lottery of 1823 and moved to Monroe County, Georgia from Morrison's District, Washington County, Georgia in 1824. There has been speculation that William's father's name was also William--predictable--and had a brother Jeremiah. The Jeremiah Chancellor line is fairly well documented. However, our line prior to my 2nd great-grandfather is not. There is a legend that William and Jeremiah had a brother Jackson (of the Chancellorsville, VA fame) who all came over together from England around the outbreak of the American Revolution and the father, being a loyalist sailed back to England alone because the sons sided with the American patriots. Is there any proof to this story? We may never know. At this point it is simply legend for no records have been found to validate this story. I feel as though a part of me is missing, though, because I desperately want to know who my 3rd great-grandfather was and where he came from.

Mary CHANCELLOR

Mary was the wife of William Chancellor, my 2nd great-grandfather and was probably born between 1780 and 1790 in South Carolina. She died in Monroe County and was more than likely buried on the Old Chancellor Homeplace there, although any remnants of graves were plowed over many years ago.  Who were her parents? Two surnames that have popped up are Ledbetter and Cole, but no proof has been offered to satisfy the specifics. Another mystery.

Children of William CHANCELLOR, Jr.'s second and third wives

William Chancellor, Jr. was married three times; however, we only have marriage records for two of these so whether the third marriage was legal is anyone's guess. After 1st wife Amma G. REAVIS died in 1846 he married Susan HORN (b. abt. 1831; d. bef. 1860). With Susan he had 4 children:

(1) Henry Calvin (1848-1917); married Rebecca FOWLER; (2) Mary E. born about 1850; (3)James M., born about 1855; (4) Eliza, born about 1857. We have information on Henry Calvin as he and his family stayed in Crawford County, Georgia, where his parents lived (Rebecca was from Upson County, near Logtown). However, we do not know what happened to the other children. We know that the CHANCELLOR name has been spelled numerous ways--CHANCELY, CHANCELEY, CHANCLY, CHANCELOR, CHANCLOR to name a few. Could it be that some of the children used one of these spellings? Nonetheless, records have been difficult to come by.

William's next marriage was to Susan's sister Chloe (spelled a variety of ways: Cloughy, Cloe, Clara) HORN. Together they also had 4 children:

(1) Robert--born about 1859; (2) Jefferson--born about 1862; (3) Josephine--born about 1864; (4) Ambrose--born about 1866. Recently we found Ambrose in Wilcox County, Georgia with the last name CHANCLOR. He married  Nancy Ann Ray and they had 6 children. What became of the other children? A son of Henry Calvin CHANCELLOR, Leonard Grady CHANCELLOR, remembered that Josephine's nickname was "Silly", but aside from that we have no further information.

Waueka FERRELL

Born 19 Aug 1911 in Hellier, Pike Co., KY.  She was the first child of coal miner Allen Ferrell and his wife Jessie Compton who was from Lawrence Co., KY.  Waueka is listed in the Pike County School Censuses of 1917 (age 6) and 1920 (age 10) in District 100.

Waueka married 1st Clyde Wills (b. 1908; d. 1992) and had 3 children.  The first two died young and the other was named Shirley Wills.  I believe Waueka had a second marriage to an Ed McKnight (or Knight).

The last time my mother remembers seeing Aunt Waueka and her daughter Shirley was when they visited them  in Sebring, FL in about 1945 or '46.  She disappeared after that and her mother (my grandmother) and uncles learned she may have gone to Chicago, IL.  Some of the family even hired an investigator to look for her to no avail.  The daughter Shirley is reported to have been in Mammoth, WV and may still be in the area.

Parents of John MURCHISON

John Murchison was born 1 January 1793 in Lochalsh Parish, County Ross, Scotland. He came to Savannah, Georgia in 1820 and became a naturalized citizen 18 December 1829. He married Mary Ann Summers PURSE (1809-1878) 1836 in Savannah. He ran a grocery store on Market Square and was a successful businessman and lifelong member of the St. Andrew's Society. No information other than when and where he was born has been found nor has information been found about who his parents might have been.

Parents of David D. JENNINGS

David D. (possibly Doyle) JENNINGS was born about 1796 in Monongahela, Virginia on land disputed to be in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The dispute was supposedly resolved in 1780, but if where he was born was actually considered at the time to be in Virginia  or Pennsylvania is suspect. Regardless, he married Ruth E. WRIGHT (1796-1873) of Westmoreland County. In an obituary written by David A. Jennings (grandson of David D. Jennings) and printed in the Trades Record, a monthly magazine published in Columbus, Ohio during the early 1900's states the following:

"David Doyl(e) and Ruth Wright JENNINGS located nearly a hundred years ago in the part of Morgan County which was incorporated in the newer County of Noble and had ten children, all of whom reached years of maturity.  Both David D. Jennings and his wife, Ruth Wright, were born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1802. Two branches of the Jennings family settled in that part of Virginia in the century before the birth of David D. Jennings, but we are not certain to which he belonged.  The most numerous are the descendants of John Jennings, who located at Fredericksburg in 1754 and who traced his ancestors to Humphrey Jennings, the iron master of Birmingham, England.  The others are descendants of William Jennings, born in Yorkshire, England, in 1676, married to Mary J. PULLIAM in Hanover County, Va., in 1724, and who died in Nottoway County, Va., in 1775.  He had been a British officer. David D. Jennings and wife lived in Westmoreland County, Va., until after their two oldest children, Abram and Jane (wife of Job WESTCOTT) were born.  Then they moved to Ohio and entered a half section of land northeast of Sarahsville, now called the Henry Musser farm.  Their seven children were born, Sarah Ann (BAKER), Louisa (McFERREN), Lucinda (WALLACE), Barbara (WALLACE), Rebecca (LONG), George NELSON and Asbury Pool JENNINGS.  Then they bought the farm on Duck Creek north of Caldwell, making it their permanent home.  David Jennings, the tenth and youngest of their children, was born there, and his widow still resides there, but he has been dead nearly thirty years."

To which branch of JENNINGS did David D. belong? Much research has been conducted on these lines, but nothing definite has been proved.

Parents of Amanda FRY JENNINGS

Amanda Fry was born 22 March 1845 in Pennsylvania and died 12 October 1933 in Noble County, Ohio. She married David Robb JENNINGS(1837-1888) 2 April 1867 in Noble County, Ohio. Her mother's name is unknown, but on her death certificate her father's name is given as George Fry. .One obituary states that her parents died when she was a child.  Survivors of Amanda were listed as brothers William and John Fry of Nebraska. She was living with foster parents Clement and Jane (Jenny) ROSS and is listed in the 1850 Ohio Census for Sharon Township in their home, aged 6. While there is information on the ROSS and JENNINGS families, no George FRY has been found in the Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania area, which is where Amanda is said to be from. Was her father George as stated on the death certificate? Who was her mother  and why was she taken in by foster parents? Were the ROSS and FRY families related somehow?
