He moved to Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and in August of 1776, joined the Pennsylvania Militia, serving in Captain Scott’s Company, Col. Parents of Richard Ferrell

1776-1860

Fourth great-grandfather was WILLIAM FERRELL, born about 1740, probably in Ireland.  (Some have reported County Longford however I have not seen the sources to confirm this).  William died June 15, 1778 in New Garden, Russell County, Virginia – a result of being murdered by Indians (From the Draper Collection III); married MARTHA last name unknown.  William and Martha FERRELL had six children: Martha FERRELL, born about 1865, died March 17, 1783; married William EVANS, the date reported to be the same as Martha’s date of death.  Needs further checking and confirmation. – Thomas FERRELL, born about 1767 in Missouri Territory, died about 1795 in Russell County, Virginia; married Sarah GRAHAM – George FERRELL, born about 1768 – *JOHN FERRELL, born about 1772 in Russell County, Virginia, died September 29, 1844 in Mate Creek, Logan County, Virginia; married about 1793, Nancy JACKSON, died after 1808 – William FERRELL, born about 1774, died August 2, 1843 in Russell County, Virginia; married Jane JACKSON, born about 1778 in Culpepper County, Virginia, died about 1850 in Murphy, Buchanan County, Virginia - RICHARD FERRELL, SR., born about 1776; married REBECCA ROMAINE(S)

*Mom is also descended from RICHARD FERRELL, SR’s brother, JOHN FERRELL, born about 1772, son of WILLIAM and MARTHA FERRELL who married Nancy JACKSON.  Among their children were JOHN B. FERRELL, born about 1806 who married Nancy TAYLOR.  Nancy (TAYLOR) and JOHN B. FERRELL had ten children, the last child, Amanda FERRELL being born about 1851.  Following the birth of this child, Nancy FERRELL died.  JOHN B. FERRELL’s neighbor was ELIZABETH VANCE, the unmarried daughter of ABNER and SUSANNAH WILSON VANCE.  During research by *Henry Ragland in preparation for his book, The History of Logan County, Virginia his sources related to him that it was common knowledge that JOHN B. FERRELL kept company with ELIZABETH VANCE and fathered her children.  (Source: 1850 Census, Logan County, Virginia – Head of household, ELIZABETH VANCE, age 56, born in Virginia.  Children: JAMES VANCE, age 18; MARY VANCE (wife of JAMES), age 19; JANE VANCE, age 1 year.  JANE VANCE, born about 1849 was the wife of EVANS FERRELL, born about 1843 (See above parents of ALLEN FERRELL, born 1889).

* History of Logan County, Virginia by Henry Clay Ragland, 1896, rewritten by George T. Swain, 1927, page 75:

"There was another daughter, Bettie, who was never married, but who had two children of who John (Ferrell) was the reputed Father.  These were Mrs. Ephraim (Nancy Vance) Hatfield and the late James Vance."
